A CONTRIBUTION FROM THE PRACTICE OF A CULTURAL INSTITUTION

On an institutional level, it is difficult to speak about the systematic work on the development of ethnological and museum concepts in the practice of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade. Certain aspects of the contemporary socio-political conditionality do not contribute to the undisturbed scientific research. On the other hand, working in this type of institution enables us to study ways in which many concepts get reified in current social and cultural relations, something that would probably be more difficult to analyze in purely scientific and educational institutions. This paper elaborates on several examples from the practice of the museum. The first one refers to the International Festival of Ethnological Film as a practical extension of reflections in the field of ethnographic film and visual anthropology. The second example relates to certain individual projects where anthropological insights were applied in the field of socio-economic development activities. Finally, related to the previous, the third example addresses the system of intangible cultural heritage - which is a modern paradigm in today’s world - with anthropological themes kept at “homefield”, that is, on the concept of heritage and contemporary implications of cultural policy perceived in this way.
