Abstract

Hip hop music, once just a subculture, has transformed into a global cultural movement with fans all over the world. In time, mottos and visions surrounding hip hop culture and dance became a sort of a universal principle (peace, love and companionship for everyone in the world). The aim of this paper is to show whether the “European” hip hop identity is being constructed at hip hop dance competitions. The main questions in relation to the aim are: to which extent did hip hop culture accomplish its potential for creating a supra-identity? Is hip hop dance resistant to “European identity”, or does it enable its maintenance? And with that in mind, do Serbian hip hop dancers strive to feel more “European” through hip hop dance?
