Abstract

This study deals with music databases as relevant electronic resources in the field of digital humanities. Selected examples show how digital music repositories generate cultural diversity through their structure and choice of data. Particular attention is paid to the following databases/portals/ music search engines: Themefinder, ViFaMusik database (Virtuellen Fachbibliothek Musikwissenschaft), Arnold Schönberg Center Archive and John Cage Unbound: A Living Archive. We hold an opinion that the application of information technology in the field of “digitized music history” can provide insights that, in their scope and quality, go beyond the reach of traditional analytical apparatus. Online music database users can immerse themselves in further cultural/media archeology, artistic creation or the production of new knowledge about cultural heritage and the role of music in representing collective identities.
