“SO CLOSE, AND YET SO FAR”: THE CULTURAL NOTIONS ON EU INTEGRATION OF SERBIA AMONG IMMIGRANTS IN LJUBLJANA

Accepting the interpretation that “cultural notions” are tools of cultural cognition and using transnationalism as a framework for the understanding of migratory experiences, in this paper I explore the following: what Serbian immigrants in Slovenia think on European integration of Serbia and the European Union? On the one hand, the paper emphasizes the ongoing and unstoppable emigration of highly educated people from Serbia. On the other hand, the paper draws attention to what “ordinary” people have to say about the “big issues” or, in this case, large processes, such is EU integration. Transnational experiences of my respondents, based on the life in Serbia and in Slovenia, at the same time may represent an important sign to migratory policy makers by providing possible answers to the question: why do people still emigrate from Serbia to the EU when we are on the “European way”?
