CULTURAL HERITAGE – ESSAY FROM THE PHILOSOPHY OF PATRIMONY

This paper examines relationship between the terms of heritage and patrimony in the context of contemporary terminological dispositions of theories and practices dealing with conservation, research and use of the testimonies of the past. Terms heritage and patrimony are often used as synonyms, although they are not synonyms given these terms’ content, scope and reach. Based on experiences of previous researches this paper would suggest a trial in philosophy of patrimony. The aim of the trial is to describe the relationship of the terms patrimony and heritage in different forms of their usage through a specific approach based on the ‘language game’ model. Three cases would be analyzed (cover page of a book, fragment of a sentence, and a caption from an animated film), cases which raise questions on the relationship being scrutinized here. Based on mentioned cases, possible relations between terms of patrimony and heritage, as well as culture and identity, will be formulated.
