MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND/OR ANTHROPOLOGY OF HEALTH AND ILLNESS

Social and cultural dimensions of questions of the phenomena of health, illness and medicine have become an important issue of anthropological research in the last decades of the 20th century. This paper examines the importance of symbolic, social and cultural constructions and interpretations of the concepts of health and illness for the constitution of medical anthropology’s object of interest. Relationship of science toward preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative practices is also addressed, with regard to their characterization as either bio-medical or alternative. The paper also gives a special retrospection on the status of this sub-discipline in Serbian ethnology and anthropology.
