MOTHERHOOD: NATURAL LAW OR SOCIOCULTURAL CONSTRUCT?

The continuing interaction between personal experience and sociocultural norms contributes to the creation of new and the reproduction of existing concepts of motherhood. The influence of different historical circumstances, feminist thought, and the advancement of medical and social sciences are just some of the elements through which ideas of motherhood are shaped. The paper displays the historical development of ideas about women and motherhood, as well as analyzing breastfeeding as a complex anthropological phenomenon around which ideas about the body, sexuality, gender roles and identities, as well as the sociocultural organization of space and relations is formed.
