FALSE FOLKLORISTS OF SERBIAN FOLKLORE
Keywords:

This paper begins with the reflection on the term “false folklore” and its characteristics after which the examples of the most famous domestic and international folkloric hoaxes are given. False folklore refers to the phenomenon of planting the fabricated, transcribed or corrected folklore or changing it in any other arbitrary fashion and then planting it in public as the authentic folklore. The causes of this phenomenon vary from personal promotion, vanity, material gain and the popularization of - uneducated and inaccurate collectors and forgers of folklore to their patriotic and political reasons, where the goal is the national awakening and the embellishment of the traditions of their compatriots. This phenomenon is similar to the concept of “invented traditions” with the exception that - forging the folklore has been unequivocally dismissed by many as something extremely detrimental for science, wider reading audience and the overall reception of folk literature.
