Још од првих колонијалних сусрета са будизмом па све до данас, ова религија због недостатка теизма и тешког уклапања у Западне категорије религије, бива сврставана као филозофија. Поред тога, Западни конвертити је такође не виде као религију већ је означавају као филозофију, психологију, лични пут и сл. Овај рад има за циљ да критикује такве позиције као неутемељене у реалности и фактографским информацијама, јер ни сама етнографија, као ни основе будистичког учења, не могу да подрже одређивање будизма као филозофије, или било чега другог осим појма религије.
