Abstract

Considering international migration as an analytically fruitful phenomenon and an inexhaustible subject of anthropological study, in this paper I will try to offer conceptual definitions for the study of Serbian labor migration in the Italian province of Vicenza, first by conceptualizing the term Serbian extracomunitari as the denominator of the mentioned phenomenon. Since only a few authors have dealt with the issue of Serbian labor migration to Italy (exclusively) from a (socio)demographic perspective, an anthropological or other related perspective is absent. Therefore, the paper is conceived as a short introduction to the phenomenon itself, i.e. a blueprint for its further anthropological treatment. The structure and content of the work are determined by its aims, and the following are set as the main aims: a) conceptualization of the term Serbian extracomunitari as the denominator of the community of Serbian labor migrants in the area of Vicenza; b) principle determination of the generations of Serbian extracomunitari and c) contextualization of the socio-political framework of these migration flows as a motive for migration. The entire content of the paper is based on statements and narratives that were collected during the conduction of fifteen semi-structured in-depth interviews with members of the Serbian extracomunitari. In addition, autoethnographic experience and informal conversations conducted during periodic stays in the area of Vicenza from March 2018 to July 2022 will be considered relevant sources.
